Formats and Competitions

Three cricket formats and the major competitions

Cricket is played in three main formats — T20, ODI and Test. Each format has its own pace and strategy, which means the betting markets differ slightly as well.

T20 is the fastest format. Everything happens within 20 overs, so markets move quickly. BPL is Bangladesh's most popular T20 league — fans from Dhaka to across the country follow it closely. IPL is also widely popular among Bangladeshi viewers, and the ICC T20 World Cup brings fresh interest every year.

ODI is played over 50 overs, giving the game a different pace. Batsmen and bowlers have the chance to sustain longer performances, and the betting calculations shift over by over.

Test cricket is a five-day contest. The Bangladesh Tigers have been performing well in Tests in recent years, and interest in betting on this format is growing. Besides a match winner, a draw is also a possible result, so there are three options to bet on.

Other Sports

Football and other sports alongside cricket

crickex is not limited to cricket. Football is extremely popular in Bangladesh, and football betting at crickex works a little differently — there are markets including match winner, number of goals, and both teams to score. In cricket a draw is relatively rare (almost never in T20 and ODI), but in football a draw is a common result, so calculating odds works differently. Read more about football betting on our football page.

In cricket, ball speed, pitch conditions, and odds shifting over by over make the betting market change constantly. In football, the number of goals and on-field situation influence the odds. Live betting is available in both sports, but in cricket a major wicket can move the odds so fast that you may miss it if you are not paying attention.

Popular Markets

5 popular markets in cricket to get started with

Each market has its own characteristics. Below is a brief overview of each market — team A and team B are used as examples.

Match Winner

Simplest market

Pick which of the two teams will win. In T20 or ODI there are only two options — team A or team B. Example: if team A wins your bet is successful; if team B wins you lose the bet.

Toss Winner

Bet before the match

Bet on which team will win the toss. This market stays open until just before the match begins. The outcome is entirely independent, so odds are usually close for both teams.

Top Batsman

Performance market

Pick which batsman in a team will score the most runs. If you have a good sense of a team's top performer, this market is for you.

Total Runs Over/Under

Score market

The bookmaker sets a specific run line — for example 160. Will team A score more than 160 (over) or fewer (under)? You need to consider pitch conditions and team form before deciding.

Multi Bet

Multiple bets on one ticket

You can combine the outcomes of multiple matches on one ticket. If all selections are correct, the return is larger, but if even one is wrong you lose the entire bet. See the odds section below for details.

Innings Run Range

Range market

Pick which range a team's total runs will fall in at the end of a specific over — for example 150–169 or 170–189. This market is especially popular in T20.

Understanding Odds

How to read decimal, fractional and American odds

Odds at crickex may be shown in three formats. All three express the same probability — only the way they are written differs.

Worked example 1 — team A to win, bet ৳1,000

Format Odds Meaning
Decimal 2.25 Total return ৳2,250 (profit ৳1,250)
Fractional 5/4 ৳5 profit on a ৳4 bet
American +125 ৳125 profit on a ৳100 bet

If the bet wins you get a total of ৳2,250 back (৳1,250 profit + ৳1,000 original stake). If the bet loses, ৳1,000 is gone.

Worked example 2 — favourite team B to win, bet ৳1,000

Format Odds Meaning
Decimal 1.50 Total return ৳1,500 (profit ৳500)
Fractional 1/2 ৳1 profit on a ৳2 bet
American -200 You need to bet ৳200 to make ৳100 profit

American minus odds (-200) indicate a lower price for the favourite. On a ৳1,000 bet you get a total of ৳1,500 back (profit ৳500).

Multi bet calculation (3 selections)

If three selections have decimal odds of 1.40, 1.80 and 1.90, the combined odds are 1.40 × 1.80 × 1.90 = 4.79 (approximately). A ৳100 bet returns ৳479 — but all three selections must be correct. If even one is wrong you lose the entire ৳100.

Live Betting
In-Play Markets

How odds change while the match is in progress

Live or in-play betting is the most fast-moving part of cricket betting. Once the match starts, odds can update after every ball. When a major wicket falls — especially an opener or the captain — odds shift quickly.

Some common situations that affect odds:

  • Quick wickets in the powerplay: If team A loses 2–3 wickets in the first 6 overs, team B's odds shorten and the market value on team A rises.
  • Bowling change: When a spinner comes on, run scoring may slow down, so odds in the over/under market shift.
  • Run scoring in the death overs: Big hits in the death overs push the total up, and the target for the batting team also moves up and down.
  • Weather or light change: If the match stops due to rain or poor light, the target changes under the DLS method, which affects the live markets.
Betting Tips

Some useful advice before you start

Betting is one way to enjoy the game — keeping that in mind, the points below can help make the experience better.

  • Start with one market: If you are placing a bet for the first time, start with the two simpler markets — match winner or toss. Move on to other markets once you are comfortable reading odds.
  • Set a budget beforehand: Before each session, decide how much you will bet. Staying within your budget keeps the experience enjoyable. Read more about responsible betting.
  • No rushing in live betting: Because odds change fast, making decisions under pressure is not a good idea. Focus on the markets you understand.
  • Choose markets based on the format: In T20, top batsman and multi bets are popular. In ODI, over/under. In Test, match winner or draw markets.
  • Read the terms and conditions: Before placing a bet, it is worth going through crickex's terms and conditions once — especially the wagering requirements for bonuses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about cricket betting

In T20, results come quickly and odds can change after every ball. In ODI, the pace of the match is slower, so markets stay stable for longer. In Test cricket, a draw is a third possible result, which means there are three options in the market — making it fundamentally different from T20 and ODI.

Live markets stay open from the start of the match to the end, though the bookmaker may temporarily suspend markets at certain moments — such as right when a ball is being bowled. New odds come in at the end of an over or after a wicket falls.

If a match is abandoned due to rain, betting rules apply according to the bookmaker's terms. Generally, if a minimum number of overs have not been completed, bets may be voided. See the terms and conditions page for specific rules.

Both leagues are T20 format, so the types of markets are essentially the same. The difference lies in team strength and pitch conditions — which influence the odds. Since BPL involves local teams, Bangladeshi fans may find it a bit easier to analyse the markets.

All three formats show the same probability — the only difference is presentation. Many people find decimals easier because multiplying directly gives the total return. Example: with odds of 2.25, a ৳1,000 bet returns ৳2,250 in total. Choose whichever format you are comfortable with.
